The last attachment

Silently I listen to my life. I hear the past day, the past hour. I hear everything that has been of

importance to me. I listen, everything is present, it is silent, my thoughts are quiet. I hear the silence into which my life has dissolved. It is everything, it is nothing.

Everything I have fought for, have longed for, have hoped for needed to be experienced. It concerns not just me but my parents and all my ancestors as well. It was a life filled with hope and desperation, belief and disbelief, good and evil, a life of repeated disappointments, a life filled with anger and grief, with fear and courage. It was a life in which love developed from a frail, delicate shoot into a sturdy tree, well rooted and with a crown reaching for the sky.

It is quiet now, everything is present though my mind is empty, no thoughts, no words. I listen to the sound of silence. It is almost like music, I hear the silent notes from which I sprang. It is tranquil, peaceful.

The first morning light illuminates the landscape, the wide valley, the mountains, the grey haze. A bird tentatively shifts to another tree. Life is starting up again with a racket and I, I have the choice to participate or to stay where I am.

My last attachment is love. I love people, I love everything, even my enemies. Letting go: I will not be the first nor the last to achieve the last step on the path of life.

I still have a few more years before me. I shall be compassionate and love. I believe that I will let go trustingly.

It is light, the sun is rising. My choice is made. I will actively accept life as it presents itself to me

instead of being dragged along. I will love.
